The state health department is making cautious moves after it received nine files from the police department related to irregularities in kidney transplant cases from different hospitals in the city. Although health officials have not yet started scrutinising the files, an opinion on the issue is expected within a month.

After the Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital kidney racket was busted recently, police had started investigating more cases where they feel there could be some irregularities. They acquired some files and sent them for expert opinions to the health department.

Sources said that once the investigation on the current cases is over, officials will start working on those files which they got from the police. According to them, there are chances of gross irregularities coming to light.

On July 14, Powai police had arrested five doctors for their suspected role in the kidney transplant scam. Later, an Andheri court granted bail to all of them. Sources, however, said this was just the tip of the iceberg and many more people might be involved in such malpractices. So now the police are looking at old kidney transplant cases to identify these suspected malpractices.

One of the health department officials whom this correspondent approached avoided the subject saying that currently the investigation officer is on leave and that there is nothing much to say about it.

In India, kidney transplant is performed under the Transplant of Human Organs Act-1994, which was amended in 2014. According to the law, if donor and recipient are close relatives, they need to take permission from a hospital-level committee. If they are extended relatives, from outside the state or country, or if it is a case of swap transplant, such cases go to the State Authorisation Committee for permission.
