The headless body of a woman was found in a sack which was dumped on the main road in Nalasopara on Sunday. The woman is yet to be identified.

The saree she was wearing was fluttering out of the sack and was surrounded by dogs. The locals sensed something wrong and called the police. “The body was dumped on the main road.

There were no blood stains. The woman was murdered somewhere else and was dumped here,” said a police officer.

We have registered a case under section 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code and trying to establish the woman’s identity, he added.

With Vasai-Virar region having lots of open marshy land and no police patrolling, crimes in the area have increased.

On October 9, a 40-year-old man was found murdered near the Vasai creek. On the same day, a 20-year-old boy was stoned to death and his body dumped near Nalasopara station. “Bodies are often being dumped on Vasai-Virar stretch. We are facing a staff crunch and are trying to curb crime rates in the region,” said a senior police officer.
