The Bombay high court recently upheld a lower court order sentencing a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for molesting and murdering a minor girl in 2001.

Justices PV Hardas and Revathi Mohite Dere, while convicting Anilkumar Singh, observed: “The chain of circumstantial evidence is so complete that it excludes every hypothesis of the innocence of the accused and unerringly points to his guilt.”

As per the prosecution’s case, the accused used to work as a watchman at the society in Andheri (W) where the girl lived. On September 15, 2001, the girl was alone at home and had allegedly asked Singh to come and kill a cockroach in the house. When the mother returned in the afternoon, she found her daughter dead.

The accused was nabbed from a house in Colaba, where he was hiding. During the trial, the prosecution examined around 11 witnesses to bring home the guilt of the accused.
