The Bombay high court on Monday restrained the Kalyan-based Vijay Tarun Ganpati mandal from screening a video depicting the four youths who are believed to have joined the insurgent group Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS) to fight in Iraq. One of these youths is believed to have been killed in a bomb blast.

A division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice P D Kode directed the mandal to refrain from playing the 9-minute video clip. The court was hearing a petition filed by the mandal challenging a notice issued to them by the Kalyan Police.

Vijay Salvi, Shiv Sena's Kalyan city president and founder of the mandal, said, "Our video depicted how people should live in peace and garner public opinion. However, since the court has passed the restraining order, we are bound by it and will not go against it."

Public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde said, "The video could create a law and order problem in the area. To avoid that we had argued that the mandal should be restrained from showing the video. The court accepted our arguments."

The mandal had submitted a CD of the video to the police. The police served the notice on August 25, asking it to delete a major portion of the video if it wants to go ahead with the screening. As per the rules, the organisers of Ganesh festivities have to seek permission from the police and also explain to them the theme of the show. The police in their notice said that the content of the video would hurt the sentiments of other communities and create a law and order problem.

Arif Majeed, one of the four youths from Kalyan suspected to have joined IS, reportedly died in a bomb blast in Mosul a few days ago. As per reports, Shaheen Tanki, who along with Arif, Fahad Tanvir Sheikh and Aman Naim Tandel, had disappeared during a trip to Iraq in May, called his family on Tuesday and informed them about his death.
