Brainstorm more and come with an easy-to-relate name in Marathi for offices meant to help women affected by domestic violence, the Bombay high court has told the Maharashtra government. The offices, which have been set up under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act in every taluka of the state, are known as Child Development Programme Offices (CDPO).

The court's observation was in response to four names shortlisted by the state – Abhaya, Disha, Dilasa and Sakhi Sahita Kendra. A division bench of Justice Naresh Patil and Justice V L Achilya expressed surprised: "We are not confident about the names you have suggested. You (state) needs to come out with more relatable names."

The HC was hearing a public interest litigation filed by advocate Rajendra Anbhule, who has contended that protection officers have not been appointed in many districts under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.

During the last hearing, an upset HC had tried to drill some common sense into the heads of state babus. It had said, "Shouldn't the name of your office be such that aggrieved woman can easily understand and approach you to redress their grievances? What is the point in spending lakhs of rupees on your staff and office if the end user does not benefit?"

The court suggested to the government to have a standard board, with readable fonts and colour, for CDPOs across the state. It also said that similar uniformity should be maintained with regard to district offices of the protection officer.

It said "The government should come out with a method to ensure that measures are taken to help the woman and proper awareness is spread in the society to ensure that women come forward and take the help of protection officers who are to be posted at each taluka and district levels under the Domestic Violence Act."

Under the DV Act, a protection officer shall conduct inquiry into allegations of domestic violence and arrange for meetings if needed between the disputing parties. A protection officer also forwards legal assistance to women as required under the DV Act.

The government has set up offices in every taluka to help women victims of domestic violence. After being directed by the HC to come up with easy-to-relate names for these offices, the state came up with four names – Abhaya, Disha, Dilasa, and Sakhi Sahita Kendra. However, they didn't meet the court's expectations.
