The Thane police department, after taking the statement of the lone survivor have revealed that Hasnain Warekar was cruel to the family members, but pretended to be a family man for the outer world.

The cops revealed, Hasnain's family learnt about him allegedly sexually abusing his ill sister, which led to the killings. However, the cops are also probing into the matters of his debt.

Hasnain Warekar, 35, a resident of Kasarwadavali, Thane had killed 14 of his family members with a cleaver and later hanged himself to the staircase on February 28. The lone survivor Subiya Bharmar's statement was recorded and in the 8 page statement to the cops, she has narrated the night of horror.

"Hasnain always was abusive and family members were always afraid of him, but he pretended to be a family man for the outerworld. He had planned the killings and he went to bring his sister from Bhiwandi as she was not ready to come to the daawat", said the official.

"The youngest sister believed that Hasnain could have killed the family for two reasons, first was debt and the second could be the sexual assault of his sister. On January 6, his sister Batul informed Subiya regarding the abuse and a month later during the family get together, Hasnain heard the conversation related to his sexual assault on sister," said an official.

"We strongly suspect that Hasnain was insecure about his image as he felt that the people would learn about him sexually abusing his sister and to keep his image clean, he killed the family who knew about the abuse and later hanged himself and that could be the reason behind the in-laws not visiting the daawat on the incident night," said Ashutosh Dumbare, Joint CP, Thane.

"The Rs70 lakhs debt on him could have made him restless, revealed his sister and superstitions were not the reason behind the killings. We are also investigating regarding the money invested by him," said Dumbare.

"Normally the family slept late but on the day of the incident, the family members slept early after eating food, which we suspect is due to the sedatives and we are waiting for the forensic analysis report," added Dumbare.
