The business end of the MSSA Harris Shield gets under way at Shivaji Park, Dadar on Tuesday with the final set of 16 teams in the Elite Division set to fight for a place in the semifinals.

This has been a change from the earlier format where there used to be a separate Elite and Plate group stage for the competition. The competition saw 130 teams take part in a knockout format where winners of the pre-quarterfinals (16 teams) made the Elite Division, but now are divided into four groups where they will face the other side once in a league format. Like the earlier format, these matches will be played over three days. The four winners from each group will then face off in the semifinals starting on the December 16.

The change in format may be opposed by some, but for MSSA cricket secretary HS Bhor, the new competition gives a chance for the losers of the pre-quarterfinals to fight it out in the Plate Division knockout stages. "It used to be game over in previous editions once these teams lost in the knockout. But now these 16 sides have another chance to win something.."

Having dominated the Harris Shield winning it for the past six years, Rizvi Springfield (Bandra) will look to get their league campaign of to a winning start as they face VPMS Vidyamandir (Dahisar) at Shivaji Park on Tuesday.
