In the next five years, the Harbour line will be extended till Borivali which will allow trains all the way from CSMT and Panvel to ply. This is part of the Rs 826 crore extension that falls under Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3A.

This will allow connectivity till the ends of western suburbs, Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai. "We will now be planning the alignment and seeing where all there is a need to acquire land," said a railway official.

In this year’s Union Budget, this project was allotted funds which shall be implemented by the MRVC. The new line is expected to take at least five years from now. Already the railway authorities have begun demolishing slums, especially near Malad and Kandivali for the two new lines.

There is a need for land to be acquired as well for the two lines. This extended Harbour line is the reason why the elevated rail corridor on Bandra-Virar is likely to be scrapped.

NEED FOR LAND

The extension will need land. This stretch up to Borivali is the reason why the elevated rail corridor on Bandra-Virar is likely to be scrapped
