An elderly couple from the city has written to the President of India seeking permission to end their lives after being subject to constant alleged harassment by officials of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). The officials are allegedly giving the redevelopment benefit of their apartment to a third party who has 'fraudulently' transferred the apartment in his name.

Bharat Shah, a resident of Kandivali, said, "I have written the letter as I have no option left. I had given the apartment on rent to an individual named Yasin Sayyed but he has fraudulently transferred the apartment in his name and is now also going to get benefit in the redevelopment of the project." However, Sayyed denied the allegations claiming he had legally purchased the apartment from Shah.

Shah added, "I have been submitting evidence of my ownership to MHADA officials but none of them have paid heed to my grief. I am staying on rent since 2011 despite owning an apartment." In his letter to the president, Shah has named several officials as responsible for his death including Milind Mhaiskar, Vice President, MHADA, Subhash Lakhe, CEO, MHADA Mumbai Board and Sanjay Kumar Verma, Chief Vigilance Officer, MHADA along with two SD Corporation representatives and redevelopment firm of the society.

Meanwhile, Mhaiskar said, "We are following the process and cannot pass any wrong order. Based on the allegations, we are investigating the matter and the real beneficiary will be get the entitlement accordingly." Lakhe and Verma did not reply to a query sent by DNA. Amit Thacker of SD Corporation said, "All these allegations are baseless and our track record is excellent."
