It took us awhile to spot the quaint café Roti Kapda Makaan located near Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel. As we entered it, we immediately felt at ease after looking at the walls covered with knick-knacks ranging from watches to floor mats to T-shirts to coffee/tea mugs. However, what really caught our attention was the manner in which they were presented.

A mix of everything
Roti Kapda Makaan is quite synonymous with its name—'Roti' stands for the food they serve, 'Kapda' are the clothes put up for purchase and 'Makaan' caters to the products required for the home. One of the interesting products on display was the 'Toilet Golf'' made from the same professional turf found at miniature golf courses. This golfing set also comes with a cup and a flag, two golf balls, a putter and a "Do Not Disturb" door hanger. As for the apparel, there is something for everyone. From T-shirts donning The Beatles to quirky-worded tops for pregnant women to clothes for babies and casual wear, you name, they have it!

The quirk factor
What makes this café different from the others in Mumbai is that it took every bit of effort to decorate the usual things, differently. For example, you would expect lights to be hanging from the ceiling. However, these weren't just ordinary lights. The bulbs were fitted to cheese graters and it was fascinating to see how creatively decorated the place was.

Taste report
With stomachs growling, we settled down to finally have, what we thought, would be a sumptuous lunch. Even the menu card got our hopes up. Patiently, we waited for the dishes to be served, and when they did, my heart fell. You'd expect large potions of each dish, but the Spaghetti with Arrabiatta Sauce came in a jam jar which wasn't, in my opinion, sufficient for even one person. And with everything priced above hundred bucks, it was quite a disappointment. The 'Biryani In A Jar' was laden with spices and the right flavours, but again, the quantity was too less for those looking for a filling meal.

Despite the poor portions, the food was tasty and there was a wide variety. From samosa curry to spaghetti to pani puri in a shot glass to cakes, we witnessed unimaginable dishes such as samosas with coconut curry, pav bhaji in cones and coffee in a camera-lens cup!

Nevertheless, it was an adventurous tasting experience with friendly assistance—a must-go for those interested in experimenting with food.
