The alleged ragging of a second-year law student Rashmi Shah (name changed) of Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Vile Parle, has put her into a state of depression. She stopped attending lectures and is now on the verge of missing her fourth semester examinations. Shah's father said that his daughter was ragged by three classmates, but college authorities refused to address the issue. According to her father, cops at Juhu police station were informed about the incident, but did not register a case.

After her 'history of courts' lecture on September 16 last year, Shah was sitting in the classroom. Two students were standing at the entrance when another student standing behind Shah took out her shoe and aimed at one of the male students at the door. But, the mischievous student's shoe missed her friend and hit Shah. Shah's father said that the shoe hit her so hard that she fell unconscious for a few minutes.

When she regained consciousness she started crying. The professor, who was still in the room went up to her. She asked her to complain to the principal Dr LR Dwivedi. The principal asked Shah to file an FIR with the police.

After the complaint to Dr Dwivedi the three student's began bullying Shah. Whenever they passed her they said: "Le kya ukhad liya principal ke paas jakar...." (Your complaint to the principal has made no difference). The students started gossiping about the incident with their friends, seniors and peons thus humiliating Shah.

The girl finally told her father about the harrassment she was facing in college. It is then that her father called up the principal and urged strict action.

Rashmi said: "When my father visited the principal Dr Dwivedi, he said that he hadn't realised that the incident was so serious. The principal made the three students apologise to Shah. They wrote a formal apology letter, but the harrassment and bullying continued."

One day when Shah received the attendance sheet in class for her to sign she saw the acronym 'FIR' scribbled near her name. Thus, the bullying continued.

Shah's father said, "Rashmi was made to write her statement of her complaint in the principal's presence while the students went home and got time to draft an apology letter. Somehow, with all the ragging Rashmi gave her third semester exams. However, when the college reopened in January she couldn't muster the courage to attend lectures. She almost committed suicide. I am upset that the college has not done enough to help my daughter and the Juhu police have also been lackadaisical. Now, because of poor attendance we have been sent a letter that Rashmi cannot write her fourth semester exams."

Other side of the story:

Principal Dr LR Dwivedi said: "Preliminary enquiry showed that the incident was an accident and unintentional. According to the high standards of discipline in this college Shah has received a letter of apology. The incident when 'FIR' was scribbled near Shah's name occurred when the three students were not in the class. Despite, that the three got suspended from college for a week. We even shifted them to a separate division. Preliminary enquiry shows the incident was not one of ragging and that this is just a matter of Shah and her father having a different perception of the incident.

Abhay Shastri, senior inspector of Juhu police station refused to comment on the incident. DCP Satyanarayan Chaudhary, also refused to comment.
