Fifteen companies have expressed their interest in redeveloping Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport under the Public-private partnership (PPP) model. After a few failed attempts to partially privatise Ahmedabad and Jaipur airports, the Union government in November had changed track and has opted for the PPP model for six airports, offering them longer concession period of 50 years to enable them greater returns. The decision was taken following the successful implementation of the model in Delhi and Mumbai airports which led to revenue growth and increase in tourist flow.

While final decision for the bidding process will be announced on February 28, reportedly big players including GVK and GMR, that operates Mumbai and Delhi airport have participated in the bid along with Adani and Reliance.

When contacted Airport Director Manoj Gangal, he declined to divulge any detail.

Confirming the same, highly-placed sources said, "Till date, 15 companies have evinced interest in the project. The teams have visited the airport. The number might increase further."

As against the AAI's previous proposal of partial privatisation, where the operator was asked to handle only operations and maintenance aspect, the new proposal allows the private player to hold at least 75 per cent stake with the AAI as the minority stakeholder.

In similar but separate tender documents issued on December 14, the AAI has said that the final decision will be taken on the basis of fee that would be charged from domestic passengers.
