With untimely demise of Gurudas Kamat, the Congress party, which is struggling to revive after successive defeats in Maharashtra, has lost a leader who was passionate about Mumbai and who was vocal, fearless and bold in his attack against communal and divisive politics.

Kamat made his mark especially in the Mumbai politics by aggressively focussing on building party organisation to take on saffron Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party. He stuck to Congress party's inclusive politics and never compromised with its principles.

In June 2016 he suddenly announced his decision to quit politics. Even though he was in charge of important states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, he never had a free hand in deciding party matters in the two states. However, he later changed his mind after party president Sonia Gandhi convinced him to stay back.

Kamat again hogged the limelight due to his utterances over the style of functioning of the present city unit president Sanjay Nirupam. He blamed Nirupam for Congress party's fall in BMC polls held in February 2017.

Notwithstanding intra-party rivalry, development of Mumbai was on Kamat's agenda. As a union minister during UPA rule, Kamat was instrumental in pursuing central funding and approval of a slew of infrastructure projects including strengthening of suburban rail services, Metro Rail, Mono Rail and Elevated Railway for the Western and Central Railway. In order to address the city's slum issue, Kamat was at the forefront to increase the size of dwelling units t0 350 sq ft from 250 sq ft under the slums rehabilitation scheme.

At a time, when Mumbaikars are struggling to cope up with the rapidly decaying infrastructure, the city has lost a leader who made every attempt to solve the most complicated and vexed issues with ease.
