A special MCOCA court on Friday handed over Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant to jail authorities and directed him to serve the remainder of his life imprisonment sentence. Merchant was held guilty by the Sessions Court for his involvement in the murder of music baron Gulshan Kumar.

The city crime branch on Thursday had arrested Merchant, an aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Merchant was on Monday released from a Bangladesh jail after the expiry of his jail term for cross-border intrusion. Merchant was convicted for killing Bollywood music baron Gulshan Kumar in 1997.

In 2003, Merchant was sentenced to life imprisonment in Mumbai for killing Kumar. Merchant was the only one of 19 accused to be convicted in the case. Merchant, however, filed an appeal against his conviction. He absconded after being released on parole in April 2009 to visit his family in Mumbai. In the same year, Bangladeshi authorities arrested him from Mourail, with two of his associates, while he was hiding out in the home of one Kamal Mian. He was then sentenced to five years in prison for intruding and illegally staying in Bangladesh.
