On the occasion of Independence Day, Thane guardian minister, Eknath Shinde hoisted the national flag at the district collector office and also gave an assurance to make Thane, the best district in the state. He announced various ways to make the district well known, as three municipal corporations within the district, have been nominated for the smart city tag. Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) have been nominated as smart cities.

Keeping in mind the grave issue of cluster development, Shinde said, "There is a constant increase in the population of the city. The recent incidents of building collapse have brought to light the urgent need for better housing facilities for the residents. Available open spaces will be used for such requirements. We shall come up with a plan that is on the lines of the cluster development to avoid instances of building collapse in the future and ensure the safety and security of the residents."
He also insisted that development should be overall and the responsibility of the Mumbai-Nagpur highway, that has been encrusted to him, will be completed soon.
"Water, electricity and good roads will be the prime focus. We shall ensure complete development of the district. Not only through social or economic boost, but also safety issues will be focused. Good services in terms of health and education will also be offered to all the residents soon," he added, while sharing his vision to make Thane district, one of the best in the state.
Also, present at the flag hoisting was, MLA Dr Shrikant Shinde, MP Rajan Vichare, Pratap Sarnaik, Sanjay Kelkar, mayor Sanjay More, district collector Dr Ashwini Joshi, officials from the zilla parishad, TMC and police officials.
