The Powai incident in which a 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped on Friday by the security guard of her own housing society has once again put a question mark on the safety of women in Mumbai.
The woman was sexually assaulted in the wee hours of Friday and the guard has since been arrested. He has been remanded in police custody till February 1.
The police said the victim, a dance teacher by profession, had gone to a hotel in Powai for dinner with two of her friends on Thursday.
Post midnight, they left the hotel. “According to the victim’s statement, she had had two glasses of wine,” a police officer from Powai said.
Once out of the hotel, the three hailed an autorickshaw. One of the victim’s friends resides in Chandivali. “They dropped her off and left for the victim’s residence,” the officer said.
The victim, a resident of the Raheja Vihar in Powai, was accompanied by her male friend. She got off from the rickshaw a few metres away from her building.
“The friend, who resides in the Hiranandani area, then left for home in the same rickshaw,” the officer said.
The CCTV in the victim’s building showed her entering the premises around 3.30am. “But as per her friend she was dropped near her building around 2am,” the police said.
The police said the suspect saw the victim in an inebriated state outside the building. Taking advantage of it, he allegedly raped her in a secluded spot outside the premises.
“After the alleged act, he came back inside the building and sat in his designated place,” the officer said.
The victim came inside the building around 3.30am. “She came in the lobby and was waiting for the elevator. However, she lost consciousness and passed out in the lobby,” the officer said.
The victim lay unconscious in the lobby till about 5am. “Around 5am, her brother came down to take their dogs for a walk. When he stepped out of the elevator, he saw his sister lying on the floor,” the officer said.
He took her home. “According to the statement given by the victim’s sister, when the victim left home she was wearing a top, leggings and boots and she was carrying her purse and mobile phone. When she was brought home, her sister noticed that she was wearing only her top. Her leggings, purse, boots and mobile phone were missing,” a senior police officer said.
“The victim’s brother and sister immediately realised something was wrong and rushed her to the hospital.”
“After detailed investigations, we found out that the victim’s mobile phone was with the security guard,” the officer said. On sustained questioning, the watchman reportedly confessed that he saw the victim in an inebriated state and violated her.
“We have arrested the watchman on alleged charges of rape and robbery,” deputy commissioner of police M M Dahikar said.
The watchman, identified as Pramod Upadhyay, was produced before the magistrate on Saturday and remanded in police custody till February 1, the police said.
“We need the suspect’s custody to find out if he is a habitual offender and his any criminal antecedents,” the officer said.
