Ahead of Diwali, the Government Railway Police (GRP) will start an awareness campaign for female commuters advising them to take care of their belongings, especially jewellery, during the festive season.

Lakhs of residents travel back home during the festive season and tend to carry gold and silver jewellery. The GRP will advise commuters to carry minimum jewellery and cash while travelling.

"During vacation period, especially women, should be alert and should immediately contact the GRP helpline in case they sense something suspicious," said a senior GRP officer.

The GRP will also increase patrolling for the safety of commuters travelling in long-distance trains. It also plans to distribute awareness leaflets, conduct workshops and have an awareness kiosk at the GRP helpdesk on railway platforms. "We have conducted a meeting with senior police officers and have instructed them to be alert. The safety of children and women will be our priority," said another officer.

Samadhan Pawar, DCP, Central Zone said, "Most of the outstation trains are on the Central Railway line. We will ensure that the safety of female commuters is taken care of. They should be alert and inform the police if they come across something suspicious. Our quick action teams will ensure that the commuter receives help immediately."
