GRP nabs sickle-man who scared commuters

The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly holding a sickle-like weapon and allegedly threatening commuters at Byculla station. The accused was identified through CCTV camera footage at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

According to the GRP, Darshana Deshmukh, a 30-year-old resident of Kalyan, who works as a chartered accountant with a reputed firm at Elphinstone, and usually takes a train to Byculla to board a Kalyan-bound fast train, saw a man armed with a sickle threatening commuters on Thursday.

DNA had reported about the incident on December 23. The GRP launched a probe and nabbed the accused who has been identified as Ajay Pawar, a Kandivili resident. The police booked the accused under relevant sections of the Bombay Police Act.

"We took the statement of the woman who had reported the incident to the railway authorities and so we soon reached out to her and registered the case against an unidentified person," said a GRP officer.

"The accused was arrested and was released on bail. The accused claimed that he worked as a fodder seller for cattle," said Sanjay Shinde, police inspector, CSMT, GRP.
