Western Railways has been renovating and raising the height of all its platforms. However, the contractors doing the work have left certain places on some platforms unattended to, and such places stick out like sore thumb.

For example, Grant Road railway station has been completely renovated and has become passenger friendly. The height of all platforms has been increased and tiles have been paved on the platforms. However, the contractor has left the job half done at certain places. On platform number one towards the south end exit gate, tiles have not been placed in a 50-60-meter patch. The floor has instead been levelled with cement concrete mixture. This exit leads in two directions—towards Grant Road market, and the south end side, which is connected to the BMC flyover bridge. This is a very busy exit/entry point.

One of the station staff, on condition of anonymity, said: "It's intentional, and has been done with connivance of railway officials. The patch has been left undone because in one corner of the exit, people urinate. The work was completed long back and the bill for renovation work has been submitted to the authorities for payment. Railway officials are expected to inspect the site to see if the work has been completed before releasing payment. If they choose to ignore this, then there should be some ulterior motive."

When contacted, Jha, senior divisional engineer, co-ordination, was very rude. He said: "I am not supposed to speak to the media. You have to contact the CPRO."

When I told him that I did not know the proper protocol to be followed, and that I was not seeking details from him but just informing him about the anomaly, he said it was not his area of work, however he would get it inspected.

Sharat Chandrayan, CPRO, Western Railway, said: "There should be some genuine reason for tiles not being paved at this place. I will inform the concerned department to verify facts."
