The Grand Hyatt in Santacruz on Tuesday relinquished occupancy of a 3,000 sq metre plot to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The five- star hotel was set up on a 12-acre plot, of which 6,900 sq metre was illegally occupied.

The civic body has also directed the owner, Juniper Hotels Pvt Ltd, to hand over the remaining 3,900 sq metres in the next two months. The luxury hotel had been using this plot for hosting weddings and parties.

The plot is public land that was supposed to be handed over to the civic body. In fact, it only has a partial occupation certificate. The certificate for the ninth floor has been held back by the BMC. The owner can only apply for the certificate after handing over the occupied plot to the civic body.

The civic body has directed the owner to surrender the remaining plot, which currently house chilling plants. The BMC has directed Grand Hyatt to provide security for the surrendered property for three months.

Congress Corporator Brian Miranda has written to the civic body on a number of occasions since 2013 demanding that the occupied land be handed over. "In 2013, I learned that Grand Hyatt was occupying public land. The open space should be for public use. The Vakola to Kalina-CST stretch does not have any open space," said Miranda.

"Since Grand Hyatt had not handed over the plot to the civic body, we withheld the occupation certificate (OC) for the ninth floor," said a BMC official.

When contacted, Senior Vice President of Grand Hyatt, Amit Saraf, said the procedure for handing over the plot is underway.
