Outside the Marine Lines Railway station along the Maharshi Marg, the graffiti carries messages of cleanliness and surroundings. As part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) C Ward roped in students of Kala Vidya Sankul, Opera House, to create graffiti outside Marine Lines railway station.
Messages like ‘Keep your surroundings clean’, ‘A step towards cleanliness’ and ‘Keep the area clean’ have been drawn by the students on the wall. The students were given an idea about what was expected of them by the BMC and were told to paint the things that they felt the citizens were doing wrong and the things they think citizens should do. The graffiti was created in December 2014 in a monochromatic colour scheme, as the students believe that the state of our country was better portrayed in that manner.
In some places, people have spit on the walls. A mirror on the wall, which was part of the graffiti, has been broken. “Some of the graffiti is really impactful, like the one with the mirror and the pledge beside it. Overall, it’s a good initiative by the BMC,” said Ritika Vohra, 19, a student and resident of Colaba.
The civic body plans to maintain the graffiti. “I will review the graffiti every three months and will take relevant action when it requires re-painting or any other maintenance,” said Dr Hasnale, assistant municipal commissioner, C Ward, BMC.
