Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs (Independent Charge) Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Friday said in Mumbai that any law on the practice of triple talaq among Muslims will be framed only after a consensus is reached among the parties concerned. He was in the city to for a programme at Haj House in CST that trainers for Haj participated in.

"There is a positive debate underway on the subject. What I said was that any law on triple talaq will be reached only after a consensus," Naqvi told DNA.

About the Supreme Court already being seized of the matter, Naqvi said, "The court can decide, but there can be a debate outside the court, too. If the matter is decided outside the court, it will be better.”

Naqvi also said that the option of sending Haj pilgrims via the sea route to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia was “under active consideration” with the Shipping Ministry.

"That will reduce the cost of the pilgrimage by 50 per cent," Naqvi said. He added that a high-level committee was formed by the government to frame the Haj Policy 2018, according to the Supreme Court’s 2012 order. The SC order had said that the Haj subsidy should be phased out over a period of time.
