A Nanded-based Indian Police Service officer, who had been booked in an bribery case, was suspended on Tuesday. The action against G Vijay Krishnan Yadav came after the Anti Corruption Bureau submitted a report to the state government.

The officer has not yet come forward and the ACB continues to hunt for him, said officials.

Six months ago, according the anti-graft officials, a theft case was registered against a 34-year-old transporter at the Tivasa police station in Amravati. IPS officer Yadav, who was then posted as a probationary sub-divisional police officer in Amravati, and his suspected aide Sunny Singh Bugai had allegedly demanded a bribe from Yadav for not arresting and diluting charges against. The bribe was to be paid in three instalments.

"The complainant had paid him the money, but Yadav, who is posted as an assistant superintendent of police in Itwara Division of Nanded, kept on demanding another Rs 2 lakh from him. He then lodged a complaint with the ACB, which laid a trap on Tuesday and caught Bugai while accepting Rs 1 lakh," said an ACB official.

Bugai, 34, said that he had accepted the bribe at the behest of Yadav. "We will look into the involvement of the IPS officer in this case," said an ACB official.

ACB sources said that the agency recent sent its report on Yadav to the state government and briefed about the bribery case against Yadav and his association with Bugai. This prompted the government to suspended Yadav.
"Yadav's mobile phone is switched off and his location and whereabouts are not known. His last location was in Hyderabad.

"We have his recorded conversations wherein he is discussing about bribe money. Our probe has also established that Yadav had directed Bugai to collect the bribe money," said the ACB official.
