The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) in its report to the Maharashtra government has revealed that 28 people convicted on graft charges continue to work for the government and avail benefits from the state. Another 137 employees remain to be suspended despite being booked on graft charges, of which 21 Grade-1 employees.

The report, which is with DNA, states that out of the 137 state government employees yet to be suspended, 21 were Grade-1, 17 were Grade-2, 37 were Grade-3, five were Grade-4, and 27 were other public representatives booked by the ACB.

Grade-1 state government employees include collectors, tehsildars, nayab tehsildars, and other important posts that report directly to the secretaries of various departments of the state government. Moreover, the ACB sends a report to the state government for the suspension and dismissal of the employee if found demanding or accepting bribe. The state government has the powers to suspend or dismiss a government employee if convicted or arrested on graft charges.

Surprisingly, from a total of 28 convicted employees, of which three belong to the Grade-1 category, two to Grade-2, and 23 to Grade-3 have not been dismissed from state government service yet.

"We have sent the report to the state government and other competent authorities responsible for taking action against persons involved in corruption. We do not have the power to suspend or terminate the services of government employees. The state government decides if the person booked or arrested on charges of corruption will be suspended or dismissed," said a senior ACB officer.

Bipin Kumar Singh, Additional Director General, Anti Corruption Bureau, said, "We are very aggressive about curbing corruption in the state. Our motive is to make the system very transparent and citizen-friendly. We urge people to come forward and complain to us regarding government employees who ask for bribes."

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation despite vowing to curb corruption in the civic body has failed to take any action against its own employees, states an ACB report.

Eight BMC workers were booked on corruption charges, but not suspended. Two more have been convicted on charges of corruption, but not been dismissed from service.
