Government urged to de-silt water sources in Thane, Palghar

Since the capacity of lakes and reservoirs is reduced due to this silt, they are flooded whenever it rains heavily. And then in the summers, they run dry.

Thane and Palghar districts have the maximum number of rivers, lakes and dams. Yet, it is an irony that the district faced a drought like situation and there was severe water scarcity. To avoid such occurrences in future, Om Prakash Sharma from BJP, has asked the state government to de-silt them as it occupies 10 to 25 % of storage space.

Summer of 2016 is something which Thanekars will remember for a long time. It is during this time that people experienced what it is like to live without water for three days a week. Hence, to avoid such a situation, Sharma, a national council member of BJP, wrote to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to remove the silt in lakes and dams.

"Thane and Palghar districts have rivers like Bhatsa, Vaitarna, Kalu, Surya, Damanganga, Tansa, Pinjal, Gargai, Dhamani as well as dams like Bhatsa, Tansa, Vaitarna. However, due to increasing pollution, these rivers and lakes have accumulated a lot of silt to the tune of 10 to 25 %," said Sharma.

Since the capacity of lakes and reservoirs is reduced due to this silt, they are flooded whenever it rains heavily. And then in the summers, they run dry.

"Hence, one can de-silt these water bodies using polymer encapsulation technology which is eco-friendly," writes Sharma to the CM. "This technology releases a polymatic substance into the water bodies which dilutes the silt. This silt can be removed using a pump, thus, freeing up space for more fresh water," he said.

This will not only help contain floods but also increase water storage capacity of the dams. It will also help in starting the pending hydro electricity projects in the district. "We can implement this as a pilot project in Thane and Palghar and once it is successful it can be implemented in the entire state," he added.
