Learning the lessons from the successive drought situation and water scarcity in various parts of Maharashtra, the state government would consider providing restricted quota of water for every district and plan for entire year.

At present the irrigation department manages the reservoirs and irrigation systems which provide water from the dams and reservoirs to various areas of the state. It is during Monsoon and after Monsoon that the water levels in the dams rise and the irrigation department is required to maintain certain level of water so that there is neither danger to dams nor there is a danger of flooding in the downstream areas.

An expert from the department has submitted a detailed report for making this planning more meticulous and practicable. The report which is titled 'Jalneeti Ahawal 2016' or 'water report 2016' provides detailed planning which can provide water distribution management for the entire state.

The report suggests declaration of total available water storage in all the reservoirs and announcing it on the annual basis. "By maintaining the priority for drinking water, agriculture and industry as it is, there is a need to maintain adequate water stock for the needs of drinking water as highest priority. This water stock has to be maintained district wise and the reservoir wise so that Latur like situation does not arise where the state government was required to provide water via railway to Latur," the report suggested.

It also suggests efficient use of available water and ensuring that the water quota for drinking purpose should reach to entire target population and for this the report has suggested removing unequal distribution of water. "50 per cent drought prone area of the state needs special attention and taking in to account the abundant rainfall predicted this season, every drop of water from rains needs to be conserved," the report further stated.
