Soon, the state transport department will crack down on errant auto rickshaw owners and drivers without permit, badge or licence.

The plan is to form a special squad to bring the lawbreakers to book. "We keep receiving complaints of drivers plying vehicles without wearing badges and even about scrapped auto rickshaws coming back on road," said a senior transport department official.

Assistance of Mumbai police will be taken to protect the flying squad from any attacks while illegal auto rickshaws are seized.

Individuals found not having appropriate driving licence and vehicle permit or not possessing it when asked for, will face the music. If any scrapped auto rickshaw is found to have made its way on Mumbai's road, they will be seized immediately.

The action is planned in the areas of Bandra, Jogeshwari, Borivli and Thane. Auto rickshaws on the eastern side of Bandra railway station, ferrying passengers to Bandra-Kurla Complex on a sharing basis, are among the errant lots.

Transport commissioner Sonia Sethi on Thursday had held a review meeting, wherein one of the points was regarding having squads for such purposes. Periodically, transport department keeps taking action against taxi and auto rickshaw drivers and owners for bending the rules.
