Avisha Kulkarni, the parent who took Vibgyor High School in Goregaon to court for hiking fees has a new battle to wage.

Her daughter’s admission was cancelled by the school a day before it reopened on June 3. Adhishree, a Std IX student, was denied entry into the school on Friday, the first day of the new academic year.

The school, in a notice sent to the parents, has stated various reasons for the dismissal. “I had filed a police complaint at the Bangur Nagar police station last year when I feared for the life of my daughter and myself. Several threats were made by goons hired by the school management, and I had recorded the conversation. The school has now made it the primary grounds for expelling my daughter,” said Kulkarni, who is one of the main petitioners in the case against the school.

Her 13-year-old daughter had scored over 75% in Std VIII exams.

“My daughter was promoted with good grades and I had paid a fee of Rs33,000 on May 28. Her admission was confirmed, but while we were on vacation, the school, on June 2, sent a notice informing us that her admission has been cancelled,” she said.

The school sent back a cheque of the fee amount, along with the Leaving Certificate (LC), to the parents.

Kulkarni who has been fighting against the school in court for over two years plans to force it to take her daughter back. “I have spoken to the deputy director and director of education who know the issue well. I want my daughter reinstated as I don’t want her to lose focus of her board exams next year,” she said.

When DNA contacted the school, Rustom Kerawalla, a trustee, justified the school’s stand. “The parent has alleged in a police complaint that the school intends to harm the student. In such a situation, if the student accidentally falls or trips, the blame would be pinned on the management. We do not want to take responsibility of this,” he said.

Kerawalla added that any parent would want to shift the child to another school if her safety was threatened. “We did not want to expel the student at the time of the complaint, as it was mid-year. If the complaint is false, the parent should withdraw it,” he said.
