The Goregaon police have failed to track down the driver who rammed his Innova into a 45-year-old woman three weeks ago, leaving her in critical condition. They have failed to even trace the car, despite having the vehicle's registration number and CCTV footage of the incident.

Rajmati Jain, a housewife, is battling for her life in Bombay Hospital. On December 8, at around 6 am, she was on her way to buy milk along SV Road when the speeding car hit her, flinging at her at least 20 feet ahead. Far from stopping, the driver continued to drive rashly as Jain lay on the road in a pool of blood.

Although a CCTV camera installed in a nearby mall captured the incident, the registration number of the car is not clear in the footage. The Goregaon police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the unidentified driver.

An eye witness gave the police the car's registration number. However, the police have failed to match it with RTO records. Sunil Vadke, senior inspector of Goregaon police, said, "A rickshaw driver who was behind the car managed to note down the registration number and give it to the security guard of the mall. The number he noted was Mh 04 CV 8815. However, RTO does not have the number registered."

The police inquired about vehicles with the same number. They found an Innova with the same registration number but different alphabets (MH 04 PF 8815). "When we inquired with the owner of this car, we found that he had not used the car that day at all and we have ascertained his claims. Another vehicle with the same number and different alphabets belonged to a goods vehicle. Because of the number confusion, we have not been able to make a headway in the case," said Vadke.

The officer added that the rickshaw driver had not left his contact number with the guard. "We are trying to trace the rickshaw driver. The victim is in an unconscious state in the hospital. She has sustained serious injuries on her head and legs. Our efforts are on to nab the accused," said Vadke.
