On a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme, urged the nation to participate in waste management, activists in Goregaon took a step towards creating awareness on waste management. In the drive to prevent society's waste, over 100 societies' representatives attended the presentation. The reduce, reuse and recycle process was explained to them. BMC's solid waste management department's officials were also present to guide the citizens according to the rules and regulation of waste management.

Social activist, Anthony Dias said, "Our next step is to start the segregation of dry and wet waste at the source, following which will be composting. Many societies lack space for waste composting, so we have suggested to them to start the process on their building terraces. We are very happy to see that citizens are aware of the importance of waste segregation. Our aim is to create a 'waste free' society and work towards the Swacch Bharat Mission", Dias added who has organised the waste management drive.

The presentation included various methods for waste management and information about the machines available, techniques for conversion of waste into mangrove, and others.

Dias added, "The presentation was actively attended by senior citizens and the educated class of the area. We were surprised to see the readiness of citizens towards waste management. It is the need of the hour".

Although the drive organised on Sunday was limited to societies of Goregaon East, seeing a good response by the citizens, activists feel that the drive needs to be taken forward in others localities.
