Goran Paskaljevic's next to be shot in Uttarakhand

Goran Paskaljevic, one of Europe's most respected directors has decided to shoot his next project Dev Bhoomi in India, in what will be a first ever Indo-Serbian co-production.

"I was on the international jury in Goa, where Victor Banerjee was also on the panel. He invited me to go with him on a road trip to Musoorie. And that's where it struck me that I must shoot my next there," Paskaljevic told dna, adding, "I have still not gotten over how unlike anywhere else in India, Uttarkhand is. In fact, it reminded me a lot of Serbia."

Actor Victor Banerjee and he, jointly worked on the script for Dev Bhoomi, which will be shot in Uttarakhand in March-April 2015, with Banerjee in the lead. It will tell the story of a man who comes back from London after 40 years to his village in Uttarakhand. "We want to bring up the terrible destruction and havoc wrought by the floods and landslide in June 2013 by weaving it into the narrative."

Supported by ministry of culture, government of Serbia, Dev Bhoomi, the Milan Markovic production will have music by flute legend Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia.

The Belgrade-born filmmaker, who studied at Prague school of cinema (FAMU) and has made 30 documentaries and 16 feature films, shown and acclaimed at the prestigious international film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian.

The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) in 2008 and the British Film Institute (London) in 2010, both presented a full retrospective of his feature films, along with the publication of a monograph (in English) about his work.

In December 2013 and January 2014, a retrospective of seven of his films has been shown in four Indian Film Festivals (Kerala, Chennai, Bangalore and Pune).

He is the president of the India Gold Jury and guest of honour of the Mumbai International film Festival 2014.

Banerjee who has worked for prominent directors such as Roman Polanski, James Ivory, Sir David Lean, Jerry London, Ronald Neame, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Satyajit Ray and Ram Gopal Bhooi, said he was excited about Paskaljevic's film. "We share a lot in terms of our understanding, appreciation and sensitivities on cinema. So one is definitely looking forward to Dev Bhoomi."
