Residents of Planet Godrej complex, at Jacob Circle (Mahalaxmi) cleaned the entire stretch of Keshavrao Khadye Marg, starting from Jacob Circle (Saat Rasta) to S-Bridge Signal on NM Joshi Marg, as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission. More than 200 people from all age groups took part in the drive.

Prominent people who took part include industrialist Nisaba Godrej and her husband Kalpesh Mehta, former deputy governor of Reserve Bank Dr Usha Thorat, as well as several CEOs in the corporate sector. Significantly, many local residents including mill workers, shopkeepers and people in chawl also took part in the drive.

The initiative in Byculla-Mahalaxmi, was executed in public partnership with BMC and traffic police. Ramakant Rahate, municipal councillor, and Sanjog S Kabare, assistant commissioner, BMC, E-Ward were also in the forefront.

As a spin-off of the drive, Planet Godrej societies have committed themselves to a long-term civic improvement programme in collaboration with BMC. The works they plan to undertake include repairing broken footpaths on Keshavrao Khadye Marg, beautifying the drab and dirty walls with colourful street art, and painting the facades of the buildings on the street to give the area a clean and healthy look.

Extensive planning and an awareness drive went into making the programme a success. Its objective was to make the surroundings clean, create awareness about clean and hygienic conditions and sustain it on an ongoing basis. The activity also prodded government and municipal authorities to cooperate with citizens in making Mumbai a better place to live in.

Another message which Planet Godrej wants to drive home is that all complexes in the city must start such campaigns and take up the responsibility to make our city and country a clean and wonderful place to live in.
