Godman held for molestation was funded by his daughters, son

Two days after a 67-year-old self-styled religious worker-cum-social worker was arrested by the Charkop police for allegedly molesting a 17-year-old girl in his home, the accused, Anil Bharate, has been sent to judicial custody for two days.

The girl was living with the accused at his Virar residence, close to where she studied. He was sponsoring her education.Bharate and his aunt, who is one of his followers, had convinced the girl's parents to dedicate the girl to his service by living with him. In turn, he promised to sponsor her education. According to the police, Bharate comes from a well-to-do family and his daughters lived in London and the US, while his son in Nagpur would send him money, which was used for the girl's education. The accused is a retired bank officer, said the police.

Bharate allegedly abused and molested the girl over the last two months while she was living with him . She approached her uncle and parents, after which a complaint was registered last Sunday. According to the girl's statement to the police, she was made to share a bed with a man, who would misbehave with her after getting her drunk. Bharate also had a house in Charkop where the girl's aunt lived, and that's how they came in contact, said the police.

According to the police, Bharate had many followers and he has sponsored the education of many other children.The police officials have confirmed that there has not been any complaint from other girls. "Along with the victim, another girl from Lathur lived in his Virar home, and two other girls lived in his Kandivli home. However, they have not complained of any mischief by the accused," said Anand Koli, senior inspector of Charkop police.Bharate was arrested on the charge of molestation under the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act.

On Tuesday, after being produced in court , he was remanded in judicial custody for two days.
