While a global transport museum has been proposed for the UNESCO World Heritage site of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station, the Central Railway (CR) is finding it difficult to get an 875 sq feet canteen within the building's precinct to vacate the space.

The canteen was being run by Mumbai CST Central Railway Employees Cooperative Consumer Society which got disbanded around three to four years ago. Senior CR officials said that an administrator was appointed by the Registrar of Cooperative Societies to run this canteen.

"We were working as employees for this society and running this canteen. But now that space has been handed over to a third party and we have been left jobless for almost three years now," said Pradeep P, one of the employees who wrote to railway minister Piyush Goyal describing their plight.

This society has over 2,000 members mainly the rail employees who used to get food, grains, pulses and other eatables at subsidised rates. The society members allege that the CR is not doing much about it and that they should ideally remove the existing contractor operating the canteen and recover dues running in lakhs of rupees. "We are carrying out an internal enquiry on this matter," said a CR official.

This is the same canteen which had caught fire in December 2010. A major fire had erupted inside the society office due to a gas cylinder blast. The fire caused extensive damage to the society's shop and adjacent canteen.
