The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the Pune Police to ensure the safety of a 19-year-old law student and look into her allegations of facing threat to life due to her relationship with a man belonging to another caste.

A vacation bench of Justices M S Karnik and R I Chagla directed the Talegaon Dabhade police to record the girl's complaint and take appropriate steps to ensure her safety. The petitioner, a second-year law student, said in her petition that while she belonged to the Maratha community, she was in love with her batchmate who hailed from the Matang community which is considered as "lower caste" in the state.

As per her plea filed through advocate Nitin Satpute, the man was from a "poor family" and her parents, who were against the inter-caste relationship, threatened to "kill both of them" if she continued with the relationship. The girl alleged that her parents had been "torturing her". Tired of being tortured, she attempted suicide by consuming medicines in February this year.

She was later admitted to Pavna Hospital in Pune where, after necessary treatment, doctors referred the matter as a medico-legal case to the Talegaon police which did not take any action, her counsel told the court.

The couple wants to get hitched. However, since the boy is 20-years-old, the duo has to wait for one year till the boy attains legally marriageable age. Till then they have been living away from their parents.
