Parents staged a protest outside the office of the deputy director of school education on Monday at Charni Road for not being provided books and uniforms by the non-state board schools where their children got admissions through the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The protest was led by Anudanit Shiksha Bachao Samiti (ASBS) along with parents of students in several non-state board schools like ICSE, CBSE, IB from Santacruz, Jogeshwari, Kurla and Vile Parle.

Sudhir Paranjpe, co-convenor of ASBS, said, "The RTE rule states that not just admission but also other amenities like free books, uniforms. ICT education should be given free."

K Narayan, the secretary of ASBS, said, "Around 10 to 15 schools have not provided uniforms and books to the students who got admission under RTE. Many return home with notices for parents, they are punished which discourages them from attending school. We protested from 11 am to 3 pm because we are upset with the authorities for not taking action against the schools for harassing students and not helping them get their facilities."

Despite attempts, the deputy director of school education remained unavailable for comment.
