It was a time to salute the brave and the kind as survivors and donors got together to be part of the National Transplant Games 2014 organised by Narmada Kidney Foundation. This sports event, exclusively for the kidney donors and recipients, took place at Goregaon Sports Club last Saturday, and saw participants from various parts of the country.

From farmers to urban professionals, there were participants from every walk of life. We met a farmer who was treated for a kidney transplant about 25 years ago. The man was based at a place where it is difficult to even find basic treatment. But, since after-care post kidney transplant is easy, the man is now in the pink of health.
15-year-old Nishit Patel, a city-based student, was operated for kidney transplant back in 2008. He was donated a kidney by his 72-year-old grandfather. Patel is now a very active part of the annual transplant games, and also participates in the various sports competition at school, leading a normal, healthy life.

One has noticed the gap, of increasing number of kidney patients and limited number of kidney donors, widen year after year.
Dr. Bharat Shah, Managing Director, Narmada Kidney Foundation, says, "Kidney dialysis is like a bullock cart whereas kidney transplant is like a Ferrari; there can be no comparison between the two. I urge people to donate. Or, just sign up for donation of their organs post death. If everyone decides to donate, this problem will be solved easily."
One aspect of dialysis is that it is a lengthy, expensive treatment that can take a toll on one's body. On the other hand, kidney transplant is a one-time thing. In fact, the after-care extremely simple; one just needs to follow basic hygiene and regularly take their medicines. People need to understand the importance of organ donation.
The key word is donate. It can just help save someone's life.
