“I am very disturbed because of my headache and want to hear your voice for the last time,” 19-year-old Nilam Bhogal told her close friend Lalit over the phone minutes before committing suicide around 11am on Friday. She kept the phone on hold while she hanged herself from the ceiling fan in the kitchen at her Goregaon residence when she was alone at home.

“She was suffering from acute migraine for the last three years and was undergoing treatment for the same. It aggravated in the last 15 days which prompted her to take the extreme step,” Sudhakar Humbe, investigating officer, told DNA. “No suicide note
was found.”

Nilam’s mother, who had stepped out for an hour, found the door locked from inside when she returned home — second floor of Thiranga Society in Goregaon (West) — around 11.45am. The door was unlocked with the help of neighbours. Nilam was found hanging from the ceiling fan by her dupatta.

The police said Lalit was the last person she spoke to and that she kept the phone on hold while she committed suicide.  Before ending her life, she told him about being disturbed because of the migraine. “He disconnected the call and called her back more than 40 times, but to no avail,” Humbe said. “Nilam recently appeared for her class 12 exams and was constantly complaining to her parents about her migraine.”
Her body was taken to Cooper hospital.

The police have registered a case of accidental death. Nilam is survived by her parents, a brother and sister.
