On Mar 21, around 150 mumbaikars participated in the 'Run for Jyotika' to raise funds for Jyotika Khati, who was suffering from AML (blood cancer) and had raised up to Rs6 lakh for her. Khati, 24, passed away on Mar 30 due to an infection.

Premika Khati, her cousin, was with Jyotika during her last moments and could not believe it. "Even the doctors are shocked. I had told her that I am going to the church and on my return I saw 18 missed calls from her father.

He said she is serious and by 11.30pm she passed away. They said that after chemotherapy for blood cancer, an infection should not occur, otherwise it will be detrimental. What the doctors told me was that she died of septic shock due to perineal cellulutis," she said.

The funeral has been organised in Darjeeling on April 1.

The PRO at Tata Memorial Hospital said that Jyotika had fever and infection when she had arrived. "After the chemotherapy the infection overpowered her. Along with her BP, her blood count was also low," he said.

According to Roshni Rai, one of the organisers of the run, around Rs6 lakh was raised from the run. Premika said that it will be used for Jyotika's 2-year-old daughter Evna's education. "We had bought a lot of expensive medicines over the past few days which are unused. I have asked my family in Mumbai to distribute it among the poor people who need it at the hospital. The rest will be used for Evna," said Premika.

The whole Gorkhali community in the city and in Darjeeling was optimistic about her recovery and so was Jyotika. They were struck by grief at the news of her death but thanked everyone for their support. In the facebook post made by Darjeeling Chronicle, they lamented on the fact that their own medical facilities failed her. They thanked everyone in Darjeeling and Mumbai for supporting her fight. 'From breaking one's kantoor, to donating money saved for buying a camera... from making momo and selling it to collect funds, to asking office staff and friends to donate... from 100 Rs to 1 Lakh... all of you showed us how much you all cared... THANK YOU!!' it said.
