In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old girl lost both her forearms after coming under a train on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place at Ghatkopar railway station, when the girl was on her way back home after attending college. She was rushed to the hospital by bystanders and is currently undergoing treatment.
According to Government Railway Police (GRP), the victim, Monika More is a class 11 commerce student of SNDT College and lives in the Nehru Nagar area in Kurla (East) with her parents and younger brother. Her father, Ashok More, works with a travel firm.
The incident occurred in the afternoon, when More was headed home after college. According to eyewitnesses, More was standing on platform two to board the train. As soon as a CST-bound train arrived at the platform around 1.45pm, the women standing with her managed to get in, making her the last member to try and board the compartment.
However, the moment she caught the pole in the centre of the door, the train started moving and quickly picked up speed.
“More was unable to keep up with the train and just as the train was leaving the platform, her hand slipped from the pole and she fell. Immediately, she got pulled under the train. Her arms got caught between the rails and the wheels of the train within no time, and both her forearms got severed,” said an eye witness, requesting anonymity.
Several people gathered on the spot on hearing her screams. “A few students from Ramnirangan Jhujhunwalawala College (RJ College) were standing on the platform.
Two of these students — Amjat Chaudhary and Hasim Chaudhary — took More to Rajawadi Hosptial, while some others salvaged her severed forearms and brought them along,” said an officer of the Kurla GRP station.
The GRP were informed about the incident and they rushed to the spot. As the victim had regained consciousness by then, the police got details about her parents and informed them about the incident. Her parents then directly rushed to the Rajawadi Hospital and later shifted her to a private hospital.
The medical superintendent of the Rajawadi Hospital confirmed that More’s forearms were severed completely and that she is currently stable.
