Until recently, infrastructure at Ghatkopar station seemed to be crumbling under the pressure of burgeoning commuter footfall, especially after introduction of Metro services. But with a series of measures, railway officials say, the station will soon more commuter friendly.

Under the plan, the station under the Central Railway will have a bigger booking office, more spacious outposts for Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police, linkage between the foot overbridge and the Metro station and more passenger amenities.

For instance, official said the current booking office on the east – on Pantnagar side – will make way for a new office that will have five to six counters.

MP Kirit Somaiya, who represents the Mumbai North-East constituency, said, "In last few months, I have taken up various issues such as increasing of platform height, addition of booking windows and installation of escalators with the authorities. The railway administration has already started work on these projects."

Jitesh Matalia, member of Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee, said the tender for expansion of the booking office has already been floated and work should begin in a month or so. "There are a few trees at spot and officials have written to the BMC for permission to remove them."

The work to raise platform heights is almost complete, said Mukesh Nigam, divisional railway manager (Mumbai), adding that they had added more automatic ticket vending machines. "As per MMRDA's plan, the skywalk will be connected with the FOB at the station."
