Despite, the charter aircraft owners and officials from Juhu airport claiming that crashed aircraft had required permissions from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for test flying, the aircraft met with an accident on Thursday afternoon killing five people. However, the fact remains that aircraft was not airworthy yet and was grounded since 2008 when it met with an accident in Uttar Pradesh.

The firm — UY Aviation Private Limited — that owned the charter aircraft, claimed that it had the test flying permissions from DGCA in written, based on which the authorities from Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Juhu airport officials allowed the take off. However, they claimed that they did not have airworthy certificate considering it had taken off for the first time since 2008 after carrying maintenance for months.

Captain Vinod Sai of UY Aviation said, “We do have all the requisite permissions for test flying of the crashed aircraft but do not have the airworthy certificate as that is issued after the test flying is completed successfully.”

Vinod Sai also claimed that formalities for claiming insurance for the accident will also be initiated at a later stage. “Currently our priority is to cooperate with the investigating agencies along with the firm that owned the charter flight and also provide assistance to families, and later look into initiating formalities for claiming insurance.”

The aircraft was purchased by UY Aviation from Uttar Pradesh government in 2014 when it was sold after its grounding in 2008. The aircraft was grounded after it met with an accident. Also, the aircraft is more than 20 years old and several experts and researchers have also questioned the usage of a more than 20-year-old aircraft for test flying over densely populated cities like that of Mumbai.

The Discrepancy

Fact is, the aircraft was not airworthy and had been grounded since 2008 when it met with an accident in Uttar Pradesh

Firm UY Aviation Private Limited, that owned the charter aircraft, claimed that it only had test flying permissions
