Shiv Sena leader Sunil Sitap was on Wednesday arrested after a four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai's Ghatkopar, killing at least 17 people on Tuesday.

Sitap, said to be the owner of the nursing home on the ground floor of the building has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and endangering lives of others.

He will be produced before the Vikhroli court in Mumbai.

The death toll rose to 17 after five more bodies were pulled out from the rubble during overnight search and rescue operations.

"Our rescue team along with the fire brigade and NDRF jawans extricated 28 people from the debris out which 17 people have been declared dead while 11 injured have been admitted in the nearby Shantiniketan, and the Rajawadi hospitals," an official of the disaster management unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

The search and rescue operations are still underway.

According to residents of the ill-fated Siddhi-Sai Cooperative Housing Society, the pillars of the building got weakened due to ongoing renovation of a nursing home located on its ground floor, reportedly owned by a local Shiv Sena leader, leading to the collapse.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the site of building collapse and directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to file a report on the incident within 15 days.

"The offence has been registered. Police is investigating the matter. I have directed the BMC Commissioner to investigate and submit a report within 15 days," Fadnavis told the media.

The Chief Minister further said that the Government will take a stringent action against the culprits.

Mumbai unit Congress president Sanjay Nirupam said the Sena-BJP alliance in power in the BMC was responsible for the incident.

"Residents of the building had complained about the illegal alteration being carried out by a local Sena leader, but officials of the BMC just sat on the complaint.
