Hours after the Andheri mishap on Tuesday, the BMC said it had paid Rs 23 lakh for the maintenance of the Gokhale road overbridge (RoB) and the foot over-bridge (FoB) in Andheri in 2011 to the Western Railway. However, thereafter, WR did not seek any fund for that particular bridge, said the civic body.

A blame game between the BMC and the Indian Railways came to the fore. While the railways claimed that the FoB belonged to the BMC, the civic administration stressed that its upkeep was the responsibility of the railways.

"The ownership of bridges lies with the BMC, but part of the bridges that fall under the railways jurisdiction is maintained by them," said Vijay Singhal, additional municipal commissioner (Eastern Suburbs). He added that even structural audit is done by the railways.

Singhal said the BMC has paid Rs 103.76 crore to the railways in the past four years for the maintenance of overpasses. The last joint visit of railways and BMC of Gokhale bridge in Andheri was carried out in November 2017.
