To get rid of the stinking garbage bins in public places, the BMC has decided to install underground bins with sensors which will alert the civic personnel when they are 70 per cent full.

The civic body is taking various measures to eliminate dustbins placed in the open in several parts of the city. However, some dustbins cannot be removed because of various reasons. For such spots, underground garbage bins might be the best solution. Civic officials said the garbage would be stored in closed containers underground to control the spread of bacteria and odour. These bins will curb health issues that arise from the garbage that gets piled up in bins kept in the open, they added.

It is a pilot project in which four garbage bins will be installed in A and D ward in south Mumbai. Tenders have been floated in June and the estimated cost of each bin is Rs12 lakh. Each bin will have a flap on the ground which can be used by the foot to dump garbage. It will also have a hydraulic lifting system. Each underground bin can hold up to 500kg of waste.

Surat in Gujarat and Dehradun in Uttarakhand have become a trendsetter in waste management by installing underground dustbins to eliminate the problem of littering and overflowing dustbins. According to a civic body officer, "Pits will be dug and these bins will be lowered into them. Only the flip-flop side will be above the ground. The bin will also be equipped with sensors to alert the officials once the container fills up to 70 percent of its capacity. These bins can be lifted with the help of special vehicles and the garbage will then be removed and sent to a landfill."
