The Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of city crime branch on Monday arrested close aide of gangster Santosh Shetty for his alleged role in the kidnapping of a city-based businessman and his son in Bangkok in 2012.
The alleged kidnapper has been identified as Anil Kailash Chander.

According to the AEC officers, in January 2012, on the complaint of a businessman, they had lodged a case of kidnapping and extortion. In the said case, the businessman and his son had met two people for a lower interest rate on a huge loan amount, for their business.

"They were called to Bangkok for the meeting to release the loan amount and documentation. The complainant and his son visited Bangkok twice and on the third occasion, they were confined to a house and mercilessly beaten up by gangster Santosh Shetty, alias Nik Sharma, and his associates," said a crime branch officer.

He added that Shetty had demanded Rs15 crore from the family for their release. "The complainant tried to arrange for the money, but could not succeed. He then pleaded with the gangsters and his associates and convinced them to release them on the condition that the amount would be paid soon after the release," the officer said.

After reaching Mumbai, the complainant approached the police and got a complaint lodged. Shetty and his associate, Rajesh Chaturani, alias Raju Sindhi, were arrested in March 2012. "The role of Chander, who was staying in Bangkok, was disclosed in the said offence. On Monday, Chander came from Bangkok and landed at the Delhi airport. He was detained by the immigration officials on the lookout notice issued against him by the AEC and was later handed over to the Mumbai police," said the officer.

Chander, who was arrested on the basis of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, was produced before the court on Tuesday and was remanded to police custody till July 14.
