A gang of four robbers, who broke into a flat in Vile Parle (West) and attacked an elderly man as they tried to escape, have been arrested by the Juhu police nearly a month after the incident.

The police say they are investigating the possibility that the accused may have also been involved in the robbery of Rs30 lakh in cash and silver from a flat in the same building in May.

The names of the four men are Anand Koundar, 34, Sekhar Vallar, 40, Dharmaraj alias Khemu, 32, and Chand Shaikh, 40. They are from Sion Koliwada.

On the night of June 17, Manohar Mehta, who lives on the first floor of Sohani building on DJ Road, heard some noise in the flat above. When his son Dipesh stepped out to check what was happening, he found the flat open and some instruments lying outside.

"The flat is not occupied and realising that robbers had broken into the house Dipesh rushed back to make a call to the police," said Abhay Shastri, senior police inspector.

"In the meanwhile, his 65-year-old father went up to the second floor. The robbers apparently did not find any valuables and as they tried to escape the man tried to stop them. One of them attacked him with a sickle on the head and he collapsed," the police officer said. He was treated in hospital.

Dipesh managed to note down the registration number of the vehicle in which the men escaped. The building does not have a security guard.
