A gang of six dacoits robbed cash and valuables worth nearly Rs 24 lakh from an apartment in a Jogeshwari (East) housing society on Saturday. The crime took place despite the presence of a security guard at the building. The police are yet to make any arrests.

The complainant in the case, Anita Sharma (45), is a teacher and resides on the fifth floor of Vindhyachal Apartment, Hardevibai Soceity on Gufa Road. She was present in the house along with her parents, brother, who is a doctor and runs a small hospital on the ground floor of the same building, and her sister-in-law when the thugs struck around 4 pm.

The police said there are CCTV cameras installed in the society and a guard was on duty. They said six men gained entry into the building on the pretext of delivering a gift to the complainant's house. After reaching the fifth floor and barged into Anita's flat, brandishing a firearm and a chopper.

"They gagged all the five occupants with tapes and tied their hands and legs. The accused pushed Anita and her family members into a room and locked the door. They ransacked the house and took away cash and valuables worth Rs23.9 lakh," said an officer from Jogeshwari police station.

Cops said that the Sharmas lost Rs 20.8lakh, gold ornaments worth Rs 2.7 lakh and a mobile phone costing about Rs 40,000. The accused left the spot around 4.45pm. After some time, the victims managed to free themselves and contacted the police.

When asked why the family had kept so much cash in the house, the officer said, "The cash was from their hospital. It appears that the criminals had been keeping a close watch and were well aware about the money in the flat. We are not ruling out the involvement of insiders."

The police are going through the CCTV footage to identify the accused.
