Ganeshotsav: Police announce traffic curbs for Monday visarjan

Mumbaikars who need to travel within the city on Monday will have to plan the route and mode of transport well, in view of the traffic curbs on account of the Ganesh immersion processions.

Anticipating large crowds, the traffic police have made elaborate arrangements to ensure safe and smooth movement of processions and travellers.

What are the curbs in place?
The police have announced that a total 49 roads will be closed to vehicular traffic, traffic will be allowed only one way on 55 roads and heavy vehicles will not be allowed on another 13 roads. Parking will not be allowed on 95 roads during the day.

They have set up five traffic control rooms at Girgaum Chowpatty, Shivaji Park Chowpatty, near Bada Masjid in Bandra, Juhu Chowpatty and Powai. They have also erected 37 watch towers across the city to regulate traffic and monitor the processions.

Which are the units involved?
Qaiser Khalid, additional commissioner of police (traffic), said, "We have made all necessary arrangements for the visarjan and the entire department will ensure that there is no traffic problem on the day."

The police will be assisted by civil defence units, disaster management teams, home guards, traffic wardens and student groups. Medical aid teams will also be on duty.

What are the curbs in South Mumbai?
Some of the major roads in South Mumbai that will be closed on Monday are VP Road (from CP Tank circle to Balchandra company), CP Tank Road (from Madhav Baug to CP Tank circle), 2nd Kumbharwada road, VP Road (from Cawasji Patel Tank to SVP Road junction and the junction with Dr Bhadkamkar Marg), Lamington road, Jaganath Shanker Sheth Marg (from Princess Street junction to SVP Road junction - Opera House), Dr BA Road (from junction with Bharatmata to Bawla compund).

What about western suburbs?
In central Mumbai, the entire Shivaji Park road, Cadell road and adjoining roads will be closed to vehicular traffic. Tilak Bridge will be closed from both sides.

In the western suburbs, the Link Road will be closed for south bound vehicular traffic from the junction with Santacruz police station to Khar telephone exchange. Juhu road will also be closed for north bound traffic from the junction with Santacruz police station to the Link Road.

South-bound traffic will not be allowed from Rizvi College to Gazadarbandh. Juhu Tara road will also be closed from the junction with Kishore Kumar Ganguli road to Roi hotel junction.
