The long pending plan to decongest the Haji Ali junction by constructing a flyover has seen a ray of hope as the general arrangement drawing (GAD) of the proposed flyover has been prepared. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will float the tender soon after the GAD is approved.

Motorists going towards South Mumbai using Haji Ali junction face traffic congestion most of the time. The situation turns worse during festivals, especially when people visit Haji Ali and Mahalaxmi temple.

An official from the BMC's Bridge department refused to give much detail as the process is on for GAD approval. However, the official said that the flyover will cater to one way traffic only. Motorists going towards South Mumbai from Worli and Mahalaxmi railway stations will use this flyover. "Due to space constraint, the flyover will cater to one way traffic only. Motorists coming from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and Kehswrao Khadey Marg can use this route," said the official.

The plan to construct a flyover at Haji Ali junction was conceived long back. But, its design was changed many times due to space constraint and opposition from a certain section of residents. "We will soon float the tender after GAD is approved and will bring the proposal in the standing committee for final approval," said the official. However, the official added that the design may be changed if needed.

In the present design, one arm of the flyover will start from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and another from Kehswrao Khadey Marg and both will meet at Haji Ali junction. Thereafter, one arm will land in Pedder Road while another in Bhulabhai Desai Marg.

The flyover after construction will give respite from huge traffic congestion. "Around four years ago a survey was conducted, it was found that around 40,000 vehicles crossed this junction in one year," said a civic official. He added that in the last four years, the number of vehicles has increased at double pace.
